When I think back on my days as a student at Girard College, I can't help but remember the genuine spirit of caring that characterized the teachers and staff. Founder Stephen Girard must undoubtedly have had a great deal of compassion as well to have created such a warm and welcoming place of learning.
Throughout my undergraduate years and in my professional and social life, I've always felt a strong desire to alleviate others' suffering. This stems from witnessing compassion in action during my years at Girard. My regard for others has carried over into my current job at JP Morgan where I look for ways to help managers improve their leadership strategies so they can better serve their clients.
Compassion is contagious. My friends, family and co-workers are catching on, and I thank Girard College for creating an impact that will last a lifetime.

My education at Girard College taught me how to take responsibility for my actions, whether in the classroom, in the residence halls or on the playing field. Sometimes taking responsibility led to my earning praise and sometimes it resulted in tough consequences. One thing's for sure— both outcomes prepared me for the real world.
It wasn't until I graduated that I came to understand what a crucial lesson I'd learned. The staff at Girard prepared us to be good citizens in life as well as responsible, and therefore successful, students in college.
The appreciation and respect I feel for my educational experience led me to pursue a career as a teacher and administrator at Girard. It is my hope that I can pass on what I've learned and teach our current students to be responsible members of the community.

My education at Girard College provided me with a nurturing and structured environment that allowed me to develop a strong sense of self-discipline.
This self-discipline came in handy while pursuing my career as a chef. Throughout my training, I needed to learn how to be my own boss as I encountered challenging work environments and social situations. It is this ability to push myself and overcome obstacles that led me to success and elevation to my current position as Director of Culinary & Pastry Programs for AIP.
Because of my years at Girard College, I have found the personal strength I need to make good decisions on my own, which is a useful skill that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Out of all of Girard College's core values—respect, integrity, responsibility, compassion and self-discipline—I believe that respect is the most important.
In life, it is crucial that we learn to respect ourselves and each other. To me, respect is something that no one can take away from another person without his or her permission. That is a prime reason why I believe that self-respect is the only road to true happiness. Once we've learned to respect ourselves, we can pass on this respect to others.
When we respect others, we encourage them to achieve their dreams. I was delighted to have Shalonda, a recent Girard graduate, as an intern at Penn. Her maturity and confidence were impressive and further demonstrated her own sense of self-respect that ultimately helped her to reach her goal of enrolling at Stanford University.
