PHILADELPHIA ORGAN QUARTET TO PERFORM AT GIRARD CHAPEL

The Philadelphia Organ Quartet will present a concert at Girard College on April 29 at 4:00 p.m.

Composed of four nationally known musicians who were all assistants of Dr. Keith Chapman, the legendary organist for the John Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, the Philadelphia Organ Quartet has grown in recognition as the only such group in existence.

Playing at the historic Chapel of Girard College allows one of the organists to play Girard's spectacular E.M. Skinner organ, the last organ built by Ernest Skinner and one of the largest with 106 ranks and 6,829 pipes. Read more about our Chapel and organ here ...

The four members of the Philadelphia Organ Quartet are Michael Stairs, Peter Richard Conte, Colin Howland and Rudolph A. Lucente. Each of these musicians is celebrated individually and has played throughout the country and the world. Bringing them together results in dazzling musicianship leavened with large doses of humor and on-stage banter between the players (and sometimes the audience). The members of the quartet feel that their unusual success comes from their camaraderie and mutual regard, as well as their ties to the Wanamaker Organ.

Understandably only several pieces of music were ever written for four organs. The wide range of current repertoire includes these works (Monk Mueller), adaptations of other works for organ, as well as symphonic, popular, religious, ragtime, classical and Broadway works.

Following the concert, the Girard College Organ Guild will hold a meet-the-artists reception in Founder's Hall, a national historic landmark and the first building erected for Girard College, completed in 1847.

This afternoon promises to be a unique and inspiring musical event. Don't miss it!
